Pregnant constr.: ἀνανήφειν ἐκ τῆς τοῦ διαβόλου παγίδος 2 Ti 2:26. νικᾶν ἔκ τινος free oneself from … by victory Rv 15:2 (for possible Latinism s. reff. to Livy and Velleius Paterculus in OLD s.v. ‘victoria’; but s. also RCharles, ICC Rv II, 33). ἐλεύθερος ἐκ 1 Cor 9:19 (cp. Eur., Herc. Fur. 1010 ἐλευθεροῦντες ἐκ δρασμῶν πόδα ‘freeing our feet from flight’ [=we recovered from our flight]). καθαρός εἰμι ἐγὼ ἐξ αὐτῆς I practiced abstinence with her GJs 15:4.

Etymology: The regular structure of the above forms is clearly the result of a generalising development, which will also have had zero grade formations as πνεῦσις, ἄπνευστος. Outside the general pattern there are only the isolated ep. forms ἄμ-πνυ-ε etc. `take breath' = `recover from', which may provide a bridge to the semantically slightly deviating but certainly belonging here πέ-πνυ-μαι, - μένος, `mentally active, animated, be sedate'; cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 134 f. Not here prob. πινυ-τή, πινυτός a. cognates, which have only been connected on difficult assumptions; s.v. In any case ἄμπνυε, πέπνυ-μαι are not with Schulze Q. 322 ff. to be separated from πνέω. -- From other languages only some Germ. formations can be compared: OWNo. fnýsa `sniff', OE fnēosan `sneeze', which like πνευ- may contain an IE eu-diphthong; beside them there are however several variants, e.g. OWNo. fnasa, OHG fnehan, which show the unstable character of these orig. onomatop. words. Schmidt KZ 32, 384 to Lith. mul̃vė `mud, mire', mul̃vinti `cover with mire'; to geta greement also in the stemvowel, he assumes an original *μαλύνω (αλ = Lit. ul from IE *l̥). A comparison *μαλύνω: mul̃vinti with - υν- = - vin- from IE -u̯n̥- (thus Fraenkel Gnomon 22, 237) is impossible, as mul̃vinti is a Lith. factitive of mul̃vė. Of the many other words for dark, impure colours, for `dirt, defile', which have been assembled in WP. 2, 293f. and Pok. 720 f. under * mel(ǝ)-, here only Skt. mála- m. n. `dirt, muck' is of interest, from which malavant- `dirty', formally = Μολόεις; on an agreeing *μόλος, - ον `dirty' μολ-ύνω (cf. αἰσχύ-νω, σκληρ-ύνω etc.) and Μολόεις could have been built. -- Cf. μέλας and μώλωψ; cf Mayrhofer KEWA s. málam. - Fur. 227 compares φολῡ́νει μολύνει H., which might point to a Pre-Greek word.

Educ. 16, 2; Just., A I, 60, 11) or even letters of the alphabet, ABC’s (Pla. et al.) τὰ στ. τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν λογίων τοῦ θεοῦ the very elements of the truths of God Hb 5:12. This mng. is also prob. for the passages in Gal (4:3, 9 NEB ‘elementary ideas belonging to this world’; cp. LBelleville, JSNT 26, ’86, 53–78) and Col; s. next.

② transcendent powers that are in control over events in this world, elements, elemental spirits. The mng. of στ. in τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου Gal 4:3; Col 2:8, 20 (for the expr. στοιχ. τ. κόσμου cp. SibOr 2, 206; 3, 80f; 8, 337) and τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα Gal 4:9 is much disputed. For a survey s. EBurton, ICC Gal 1921, 510–18. Some (e.g. Burton, Goodsp.) prefer to take it in sense 1c above, as referring to the elementary forms of religion, Jewish and polytheistic, which have been superseded by the new revelation in Christ (so also WKnox, St. Paul and the Church of the Gentiles ’39, 108f; RGrant, HTR 39, ’46, 71–3; ACramer, Stoicheia Tou Kosmou, ’61 [the unregenerate tendencies within humans]).—Others (e.g. WBauer, Mft., NRSV) hold that the ref. is to the elemental spirits which the syncretistic religious tendencies of later antiquity associated w. the physical elements (Herm. Wr. Κόρη κόσμου in Stob. I 409 W.=Sc. 486ff, esp. 486, 23; 25; 490, 14: the στοιχεῖα, fire, air, water, earth, complain to the deity who is over all; Orph. σχέσις, εως, ἡ, ([etym.] ἔχω, σχεῖν)

A state, condition, σ. τοῦ σώματος habit of body, much like διάθεσις, which is alterable, opp. ἕξις (constitution or temperament, which is permanent), Hp.Art.8; hence ἐν σχέσει, of temporary, passing conditions, opp. those which have become constitutional ([etym.] ἐν ἕξει), Gal.10.533; τί διαφέρει σ. ἕξεως; Luc.Symp.23, cf. Herm.81; σ. ἀθλητική the habit of an athlete, D.L.5.67.

ἀ-, as insep. Prefix in compos.:

I α στερητικόν (Sch.Od. 3.279, etc., cf. Eust.985.16), expressing want or absence (cf. Arist. Metaph. 1022b32), as σοφός wise, ἄσοφος unwise: for n?ἀX, the weak form of the negative ne, commonly used in the formation of adjs. and advbs., very rarely in that of vbs. and substs., cf. ἀδώτης, ἀτιμάω, ἀτίω. Before a vowel it usu. appears as ἀν- (exc. where ϝ or spiritus asper has been lost, as ἄ-οινος, ἄ-υπνος, when it sts. coalesces with the following vowel, as ἀργός = ἀ-ϝεργός): the forms ἀνάεδνος, ἀνάελπτος are probably misspelt for ἀν-έϝεδνος, -έϝελπτος.
